Postum: Coffee Substitute

postum.jpg
I am almost out of Postum,

a powdered coffee substitute sold by the Post Cereals company. The caffeine-free beverage mix was originally created by company founder C. W. Post in 1895 and marketed as a healthful alternative to coffee. Post was a Seventh-day Adventist and a student of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg who felt caffeine was unhealthy, and thus created an alternative of mostly wheat and molasses. Postum is still available, although it is now owned by Kraft Foods.

(from Wikipedia)

I never had much Postum to begin with. Maybe an inch in the 8oz bottle the girlfriend “borrowed” from her parents and left at my place. It’s amazing how little you need for a cup: 5ml. So it’s lasted me a while.

But so Postum isn’t really anything to write home about. The bottle is a turn-off for one: it looks like some sort of Metamucil or related geriatric bowel enhancer, and it’s got this really dated colour scheme (yellow, red and sea-sick blue) and typography, and a very clogged-colon-looking illustration of two people on a bike ride in some southern marsh. You never see Postum advertised and it’s always on a remote top shelf at the end of the coffee aisle, just one little column of jars for at least $8 a piece and never on sale.

Postum’s tagline is “Instant Cereal Beverage–No Caffeine” and if I was 10 years old and hopeful to snag a cup of grownup liquid Count Chocula I’d be sorely disappointed by how much it resembles coffee. So congrats there, C.W. As an adult I wouldn’t say it’s the grail of coffee substitutes (not that I’m on a quest for one or something), but it holds its own considering the meager ingredients:

  • wheat bran
  • wheat
  • molasses
  • corn dextrin

Anyhoo, I guess I’m recommending it. You just put the brown powder in a cup and add water that is boiling. I like it before bed with honey.

Update June 26, 2006
Commenter Kara has kindly forwarded these pictures of what she says are two cans of Postum from 1912 that she found while renovating her 140-year-old house (click thumbs for larger view).

Why not enjoy some delicious tea before bed? This stuff looks scary.

There is no caffeine and it’s more filling (heavier? has more body?) than tea. It really is kinda like coffee. Well, I guess if you didn’t tell someone what it was they’d probably think it was really bad coffee.

According to a few Google searches (some are mix drinks, so take that into account), and reading the ingredients on the bottle (the first is wheat bran, then wheat), I think postum is high in carbs.

I love postum. I drink mine sweetened with pure maple syrup and lightened with creamer. It’s great. I find it in my local sore, Publix, but it is expensive. Or so I thought until I searched the web to get it for less. It costs 8.50 and up on the web, whereas in my store it 4.50.

I am trying out for the first time some Postum my mom brought – I like coffee and tea but I LOVE this stuff – very full-bodied. I added milk only but it’s already a little bit sweet and toasty-tasting. I checked to see where you can get it online; looks like vermontcountrystore.com sells it for 8 bucks a jar (if you bought in bulk you might make it worth the shipping). I have been drinking Postum on and off for 50 or more years. I drink it with milk and a little sweetener on occasion. I have found that if you let it steep for a few minutes the flavor comes out much more. Many years ago when I started drinking the brew I noticed that it stimulated my appetite. This may make it a good beverage for people that have problems in that area.

OK, my local groceries have stopped selling Postum. In trying to determine why, I’ve turned up a lot of data on the relationship between Postum and a chemical called acrylamide. It seems that good ol’ Postum has the highest content of this chemical of any foods tested by the FDA.

Listen, Coffee is not an option! I have in my possession a number of documents by the researchers that state that there are several acidic carcinogens in coffee that are linked to cancer of the kidney, breast, colon, pancreas, ovaries, and bladder. I use to drink a gallon or more a day. I quit and the “COFFEE FLAVERED POSTOM” helped me over the hump. Now in the summer I drink it with nondairy creamer, honey and ice. In the winter I drink it hot with nondairy creamer and honey. I have really learned to love the stuff.

  37. cluttergirl Avatar

hey there! Just found your page while googling postum. Love the stuff. I am also a coffee snob (drink long espressos), and it isn’t for me a coffee substitute, any more than peppermint tea is a tea substitute. It is just Postum. And I really like it. Horlicks is ok, but more like a malted milk drink. Postum rocks. And btw, they recently DID change the label images and it’s only about $6 cdn here in Canada, and it lasts a long time (unlike most powdered things, it takes 5ml per cup, not three tablespoons, as you note). Thanks for writing about postum!!

Homemade “Postum” for those of you that think Postum is too expensive. This is from Cooks.com. 1 qt. fine ground wheat, 1 pt. coarse ground corn meal and 1/2 C. molasses or dark syrup. Mix the wheat, corn meal and syrup. Rub them in the palms of the hand until it is well mixed. Put it into shallow baking pans and brown in a slow oven until it is a rich dark brown. It must be stirred often for even browning. Don’t try to hurry the process or it will burn. When it is done, cool and store in a sealed jar or canister. Use like any cereal coffee. I use 2 Tbs. coffee for each 1 1/2 C. water. It may be boiled or it can be made in an electric coffee maker. With hot milk this makes a nice evening drink. If you can’t buy ground wheat, you can sort whole grains of wheat and grind them in your blender. However, take them out before it grinds them into a flour.

I love Instant Postum and have drunk it for years in cold weather. The last place in the Dallas area I was able to find it was Kroger. I don’t want to try Walmart, even to save a buck, as I don’t like the way they treat their help. My mother drank Postum for years after she could no longer drink coffee. As for the taste, no, it doesn’t taste like coffee. Judge Postum on its own merits. The aroma is pleasant, reassuring, slightly reminiscent of cocoa. No acidity, doesn’t upset tender stomachs or precipitate heart palpitations. I’ve never tried it iced, but that would be a reasonable alternative here in the South. Just wish it were easier to find and was packaged in a nonbreakable jar.

I like Postum too and resent all this bashing! For some reason, my parents drank it sometimes even though they drank instant coffee. I’m a lifelong tea drinker and don’t like coffee at all, but I like postum with milk. There are two kinds and one is coffee flavored (or called something like that) – I’ve never had that one. I only use about 1/2 spoonful of it per mug so it lasts a long time. The grocery stores here in PA carry it with the instant coffees and I think it’s around $3-4.

For the last few years I have been longing for that good old fashion taste of Postum. I am 32 and my grandmother used to give it to me as a child. Well, just yesterday, I went to my closest grocery store (WALDBAUMS) and there it was. The price $4.69, the label shows a cup with the word Postum across the top. I love it, brings back old times. Would anyone know where I can get those small boxes of cookies from yesteryear? They come in Chocolate and chocolate chip, are in a white box with red or dark brown triangles in the corner. I do believe that they are made by Nabisco. There is a picture of the cookie with cat ears and wiskers drawn on.

I am a recent LDS convert (Mormon) and had no trouble with giving up alcohol. Giving up coffee? Painful. Postum REALLY helped with this, just discovered it. I add regular sugar and the flavored creamers and it is line with the WOW requirements. It’s NOT exactly liked the brewed coffees but for those weaning off the bean, it beats drinking hot cocoa (yuk!) 100% of the time. I have also heard Pero is good but cannot find it here in VA. We found Postum for $4.27 at local Walmart. I was pleasantly surprised given what it is made from! I would recommend it to those trying to comply with SDA and LDS requirements.

Hi everyone. Postum! Postum lore! I thought I was the only person in the entire world that drinks it. I swear I’ve never had anyone to talk to about Postum except maybe when I’d go back to Ohio to visit my parents and I’d ask if we still had that jar of Postum.
My grandma turned me on to Postum in the ’70’s when I was a kid. Up until today I thought that Postum was a coffee substitute developed during WWII. Funny how you can come up with a guess about something as a kid and then actually believe it to be the truth as an adult. : )
Anyway, I actually have a jar of “Natural Coffee Flavor” Postum. It’ has a great red/white/brown label with sort of a bird’s eye view of a cup of steaming Postum. I found this jar on in a small supermarket *at the end of the aisle* in what was a “reduced price” section of various assorted products. Reduced? It was almost $4(US)! There were about 10 jars and I keep thinking that I have to go back there and buy them all up because who know, maybe Kraft discontinued this flavor.
I was so excited to find it. I have that coffee-flavored jar, I have another jar of regular with the same label but with a dark blue color scheme. Also, I have another jar of regular with the hideous “metamucil”/bicycle ride at dusk (or is it dawn?)label that you put on this site.
Thank you, Jeff for letting us post about Postum. I’ve only read a couple of the other posts so I’ll savor the rest whilst ejoying a cup of hot Postum. (Me, I like to drink it with Silk brand soy creamer. It’s rich and doesn’t give you that weird color that regular soy milk does when you put it in coffee or tea.)

When I was a kid, I too, drank Postum. Me and my friend Karin snuck it from her parents’ stash, thinking we were cool, coffee drinkers. At 38, I’m glad to have tasted the real McCoy(coffee) but would rather not consume it as it doesn’t seem to engender the best health. I couldn’t find Postum anywhere here in San Francisco, but what I did find is even better. A friend introduced me to Dandy Blend, which tastes basically how I remember Postum tasting, but better, it is made of healthy stuff, no corn dextrin. It is instant, totally dissolving, and it looks a lot like coffee, especially when mixed with milk or soy milk. Actually I’ve had a nice rich espresso type foam on it, I’m impressed. It has roasted barley, rye, chickory root, dandelion root and beetroot in it. You can check it out at http://www.dandyblend.com. I bought a jar for work and home, and I’m happy to say, I don’t miss coffee. I was. Tea just wouldn’t cut my desire for a rich dark brown liquid to sit and write by, or ponder existential moods.

Last week, I decided to try the Postum—-and I fell in love!! I only started drinking coffee 5 years ago, and never really “LOVED” it. But I can state that I DO love Postum, and plan on using it exclusively.

My parents had Joined the LDS(Mormons), in 1971 and they switched from regular coffee and Rolaids/Tums, to POSTUM, but I never tried the stuff. Went out this morning and got the regular flavor in a small grocery store in Detroit, and it was there for $4.99 a jar.
It is a strange flavor for a drink, but I didn’t add any sweetner to it.

Yeah, I grew up on Postum too. We used to pour Milnot in ours when I was a kid in Oklahoma. Milnot was a condensed milk substitute. Haven’t heard of that stuff for a long time either. Been trying to find Postum around Martinsburg, WV. Asked Martin’s grocery store to get it but haven’t seen any yet. I’ll have to check Wal-Mart. I used to find it in the Chattanooga area at the Village Market in Collegedale (between Cleveland and Chattanooga). They carry a lot of healthy stuff there and they give a discount for case lots. Used to, anyway.
My wife and I got in a big fight once over whether Postum or Roma was better. One of the kids asked what the difference was between Roma and Postum. I said, “Postum states good.” Wrong answer! Roma is easier to find. It’s made of barley instead of wheat and it’s ok but I still like Postum better.
I was surprised to find out Kraft makes Postum now. You’d think they’d talk it up more, as good as it is. This site is evidence that there is a market for it if they’d just get it into the stores. Keep talking it up.
I like Postum either black or with a creamer of some sort, or for a really wild taste, stir in a spoonfull of Tang. It’ll make you squint. Do they still make Tang? I did that when I was in college something like 40 years ago. You might try a few drops of lemon juice to get the same effect.
Let’s hear it for Postum: one, two, three, “YEA, POSTUM!”

I’m 74 and remember my grandmother drinking Instant Postum. She drank it with milk and sugar. In those years (1940’s)it was packaged in an oval shaped can with an oval shaped, pop-off lid that was pried off with a spoon. It was also labeled “INSTANT POSTUM.” Several contributors referred to the drink as “INSTANT POSTUM” and I wondered if they were from the same era. I turned to Postum by necessity when I developed atrial fibrillation. My heart is so sensitive to caffeine that the .3% contained in “99.7% caffeine-free” products starts cardiac palpitations. Postum is better that herbal teas but I would like to find a product that tastes more like coffee. I too have trouble finding it in my area but buy it in Publix Supermarkets in other Georgia cities.

I am allergic to caffeinated coffee, caffeinated colas, all tea – decaf and caff, and chocolate.

My doctor cut out all tea (including herbal), coffee, chocolate, and soft drinks. I remembered my mother drank Postum so I went looking for it to have something hot to drink in the morning.
I found Postum in Houston at the WalMart on 1960 near Hwy. 290.
For those who cannot have caffeine in any form Postum and lemonade is about it.
If you know that it is not coffee it isn’t bad. I do add some coffee creamer and sweetner. Make sure your water is boiling to disolve the stuff.

I’m 60. My grandfather used to make it for us kids on Saturday mornings to go along with buckwheat cakes and molasses syrup. Yes, we lived in the south – southern CA. He taught us how to “saucer and blow” the drink, cooling it off in the coffee saucer.
He couldn’t take caffeine. He was a Postman. Two reasons why he liked Postum, I guess.

    Shirlene Henning,
I like Silk Soy Cream as well for my coffee substitute. I was thrilled to discover it as I can’t digest dairy cream.
Like you, I noticed that the Superstore I go to in Burnaby, B.C. stopped carrying it, then they brought it back, then it disappeared again. But I find that Capers Natural Foods in Vancouver always has it, and Choices Natural Foods sometimes has it.
I don’t find Postum hard to find in stores, unlike some of the other people who have commented. In fact, I just saw it the other day in Save on Foods in Burnaby, B.C. when I was buying the coffee substitute Cafe-Lib. Postum is in many super markets in Vancouver. I don’t drink it; I go more for Cafe-Lib or Inka. I would like to try Dandy Blend, the coffee substitute with dandelions in it. I love Postum. I fist had some and a friends mother’s house. I was a very heavy coffee drinker and would have about 5 cups a day. I was always jittery. Since I tried Postum I have been drinking it for a year and I love the stuff. To me the Coffee flavored tastes alot better than the original flavored.(to me it leaves a little aftertaste) One question though- Why doesnt Post advertise it as a healthy alternative? Alot of people are sensitive to caffeine, and Postum really isnt a houshold name. Its a shame though Im 24 and all my friends who I let try it buy it. Just a little honey & your favorite creamer and you cant tell it isnt coffee. Tastes alot better than alot of decaffinated brands too.

I love the Internet, and thank you Jeff for a forum to talk about as mundane and comforting as Postum.
I began drinking it a few years ago, like others as a coffee substitute. I must say, it isn’t quite as good as Orzo, which I buy at a local shop in the Bay Area (go Rainbow Foods in SF, don’t “chain store” yourselves, but wish I were near you!), but it is still very yummy.
Postum reminds me of the open range, the hinterland, the Pilgrim and wagon train, and all the rest stops in between. Trick is, first put Postum in the cup, then the hot water. If you dollop a teaspoon of Postum into the hot water, you might just end up with a blackened Postum tooth.

As a hispanic I grew up drinking coffee. My mother used to give it to us with hot milk in the morning to get us to wake up for school. As an adult I never drank coffee except everyday in the morning with breakfast. It was something I was used to, it was my daily routine, it’s something that I haven’t been able to do anymore for the past few years. Since getting into my 30’s I have begun having gastric problems as well as food allergies. I am now in a no-acid, no dairy (or by-products), and no caffene diet. It isn’t too hard to stick to this diet ’cause if I didn’t I’d be in for a world of hurt and a trip to the hospital, but it is PURE TORTURE! It is torture every time I am near someone or someplace that is making coffee (and other stuff) and I can smell the delicious odor of it knowing that I can’t have any :( . In my desparation I am now looking for a coffee substitute. I have seen many, but I am kind of leery about spending so much money on something that might taste bad and end up throwing it away. So, checking out the web I thought I could find the opinions of people on how the various coffee substitutes taste like and take my chances on the one with the most positive comments….I guess I’ll be trying out the Postum.

Coffee flavored Postum is no longer available in the southern tier of NY. Speaking with Kraft customer service we found that one may purchase it direct by mail. However, Kraft is taking advantage of the consumer by adding at least two dollars to the usual shelf price and capping that with a very hefty shipping charge. To make matters worse, Kraft is responding to requests from store chains such as Wegman’s by telling them the coffe-flavored version is no longer available.
Does anyone have better info? I miss the stuff. is there a like product? I’ve tried Cafix and dislike it.

I’ve been drinking Postum for over 30 years now and, recently, it has been disappearing from local store shelves as well as sites on line. I drink it every morning (in addition to coffee)for one reason: better bowel movements. And, the more I drink the better my bowel movements are. I’m sure it is the molasses in it that does this although the bran may also add a bit. Whatever is done (the drying and concentrating of the molasses?) just one or two teaspoons(cups) a day does wonders for the bowels.
Does anyone out there know where it can still be purchased? Also, I understand Kraft Foods sold their Postum Branch. Does anyone know who purchased it?

So thankful to have found espressos, sipping these have helped me kick my Postum habit. I would drink it at all times, even when socially inappropriate and sometimes I would lick my left index finger and swirl it around in a tiny satchel of dry Postum I kept in my breast pocket. I tried slurping warm molasses but only coffee made in the espresso manner has allowed me to live a Postum free life. THANKS FOR YOUR HOMESITE JEFF.

I have been drinking POSTUM for most of my life. My mother always had it in our pantry so it was “normal” for us to drink it. It wasn’t until I became an adult and had a hard time finding it in grocery stores that I realized it wasn’t in everyone’s home. It amazes me how grocery store managers shrug and make faces when I approach them about the product. I live in Wilmington, North Carolina where we have an eclectic mix of cultures as well as an incredibly diverse population. I have searched high and low for postum here, and have not been able to find it. I long for the day when I find a store that stocks it. I will most certainly buy them out! My grandparents and extended family have already placed orders for it with me. ;-)

I’ve been drinking Postum all my life. My parents used to have it in the house and I became used to it. I can remember seing it on menus of restaurants in the 50s. In the 70s, it was available where I worked, but the cafeteria workers described it as something “old people drank.” It’s still available in supermarkets but I worry at times that it will be discontinued. It’s good to read all the comments of people who drink it.

I had kind of forgotten about it until I found postum in a Smith’s grocery store back in September, so I bought some. When my husband and I ran low on it we went to get some more and have not been able to find it at Smith’s or any other grocery store in our area. I am wondering if it has finally been discontinued. I just found out from KRAFT that postum is being discontinued because of the demand isn’t worth what it costs them to make it. I am in Sunnyvale, CA and am inquiring if anyone knows if another company has picked up this product.
I just voiced my displeasure with Post, by telling them I would not be buying Post anything because I was not happy with their greed; that they couldn’t “bother” to offer Postum (I know full well it’s all about more, more, more …… for them). With the numbers switching off caffeine and other unhealthy food products, it doesn’t add up that they couldn’t afford to advertise this product to a healthier conscious public.
Dietary restrictions also narrowed my edibles, and I was highly dependent on Postum to give me any healthy alternative to vanilla for flavoring my morning Protein drink (different protein powder makers have dropped all their flavors, and I react to chocolate).
Was I happy to find this site. Amazing.

Wikipedia says it’s discontinuing it. I found a place to buy it online here http://www.farawayfoods.com/postum.html but it’s $8.60 a bottle. We have Kroger’s out east in Ohio and I get it there. Walmart might carry it again if you ask. They tend to cater to the neighborhood they sell in. I’ll be bummed if they discontinue it. I have acid reflux, too, and it’s a lifesaver cuz I love that smooth cup of coffee milk and sugar in the AM and while I’m working on my computer.
Amazon.com shows another natural substitute called Cafix, one called Kaffree Rome and another called Pero …isn’t that sp. for but….OK not butt :-). I’ll have to try those, too. I feel as if a friend has died. I agree with Nancy Fisher (185) who wonders why Kraft needs to drop an old faithful product just because it does not make multi- millions/year. If I was able to start a new company to produce just Postum I would be content to earn the paltry few millions that Kraft is giving up. Some think Postum is a coffee substitute–but ironically there is no REAL substitute for Postum.

  201. I NEED MY POSTUM NOW Avatar

I think we should boycott Kraft. Or at least if everyone calls every day, emails them every day, sends letters to their corporate office eventually they might listen.
Ever heard the phrase “the squeaky wheel gets the grease”??
The more we squeak, the more attention we will get.
But I believe we should take this public, to every blog, every website, every time we post something somewhere, include the word POSTUM and your love for it.
Maybe if we do this, when Kraft is tired of us whining and googles Postum they’ll come up with thousands of results of nothing but complaints that it’s gone.
If we all do this repeatedly, the sheer number of complaints might make them raise an eyebrow and try the product again. If nothing else, maybe in Utah/Idaho/Colorado where their largest market exists.

I don’t drink several cups a day and not even every day, but I can’t picture craving it someday and not having a way to satisfy that craving. At the age of 58 I wonder how many jars I need to try to locate in order to have some remaining in my kitchen cupboard the day I die. I hope Kraft will bring it back for the many people who desire to continue the drink they have grown to love. I wish I had an answer to everyone’s problem concerning lack of being able to locate the product, but Kraft is the only one that can solve the problem and hopefully will reconsider and take care of the many faithful customers who have bought, drank, and supported this product for years. It’s great to hear from consumers who are looking for our products because it lets us know how much you enjoy them. The tough part comes when we have to share the news that the product you’re trying to find has been discontinued.
If products don’t seem to be popular with our consumers, and demand starts to drop, a decision is made to discontinue the item. Once this decision is made, we stop making the product and the remaining supply is shipped from our warehouse to the grocery stores. Unfortunately we do not have any information about which stores may still have our discontinued products in stock.
At this time there are no plans to bring back our discontinued products, but we are always cooking up something new to help you live and eat better so you may discover a new favorite!

Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you’ll continue to enjoy our products.

I don’t drink it personally, but my husband does. He loves it. He used to drink coffee, but has since tried to stop drinking coffee because of religious reasons. Postum has been his lifesaver and it has been wonderful. He was quite upset when he heard it was being discontinued. Where can we buy it to stock up on it here in Utah? Does Macey’s still have some?

I can remember my grand-parents drinking postum (1958) and telling me I wouldn’t like it. You know what that does to a kid. I loved it. I have been treating myself to postum for 50 years now. I can hardly believe that we will now be able to get it. Sorry Kraft but there is nothing like postum.
Maybe you could give the recipe to others who would continue this wonderful product. Dear Kraft….if demand started to slow down why not promote it….don’t end it.

My mother and her friend who have been using this product for years,as a lot of other people, need a product like this for health reasons. They have no idea how to get on a computer to voice their opinion. It’s a real shame that because “Kraft” can’t make fists full of money off the elderly that they can just be shoved aside. You would think that they have a big enough business with all their other products that they could afford to keep Postum on the market. It’s not bad enough how the elderly are treated in the first place by the government now “Kraft” is following suit. One can only hope that when the decision maker of this dilema reaches an age that prohibits a cup of coffee, they too will be screwed! Most of the people who sent comments in are from Utah,Idaho,Colorado well I am from Pennsylvania representing the east coast who are looking for this product also.I don’t think it will help calling 1-800-431-7678 to complain because they don’t really care! I’m so sad to see Postum gone. It was created on January 1, 1895 and has sold ever since.
Why would Kraft do away with the product with the sale of the Post Division to Ralston?
I spoke with a good friend who worked at the Post plant in Battle Creek, MI where Postum was invented. She said that the original ovens were all removed in the fall. She got the past box to come off the belt for her museum of Post items.
We can all call and request production to start up again, but since the machines have all been removed it is a done deal.
My friend has C.W. Post’s original 1895 ledger with the Postum recipe in it. I’m going to see if I can get the right ingredients and make it myself. I don’t expect to have much success with it. :-(

I find it hard to stomach that Kraft foods decides to discontinue a popular product (but not enough profit margin; i.e., 200%) to maintain production. Why not offer the product license to a speciality outfit; oh, the cost of distribution too high, etc., etc. Thank you Kraft and on behalf of consumers everywhere, we’ll just stay away from your line. My family are all Postum lovers. We trained all of our kids and grandkids to love the product. We are all sorely upset that Postum has been take off the market and it looks like it is for good (according to the comments made). I’ve also wondered how Postum was made and thought about making it myself, as it seems like it is mainly toasted wheat and wondered if popping the wheat in a pan until it was dark and then grinding it – it that would work. Knowing me I will probably try to duplicate it, so if anyone gets the recipe, let me know – (nvy@comcast.net)

My mom had been complaining of not being able to find Postum at any market. My 88 year old dad went to six different stores until he found one that had a few on the shelf. The cashier said “What is this? Some kind of coffee?” Which proves how Post has done nothing to advertise the product! I just try to steer clear of caffeine, not for any religious reasons and grew to love the taste of Postum from my mom making it for me. Now I find this site with the bad news from Post. I have emailed them with a complaint (thanks to posters above for the email address and phone#’s). This just makes me mad. Sales going down? Well promote the product!!! Alot of people these days haven’t even heard of it unless they had a relative who had recommended it. Grrrrr! Boo to Post. They will be hearing from me alot but I won’t be buying their products anymore unless they reconsider. The only thing that works is complaints. LOT of complaints via email and/or letter. Everyone here needs to help generate alot of mail to Post regarding this terrible decision. Maybe we should all deluge them with letters containing Postum labels or grains of wheat. (That’s how the tv show “Jericho” was put back on the air – angry consumers made their anger known.)We could get them to reconsider – but only if they know how many people are upset in the first place by their decision to discontinue Postum.

I still have a jar that is 3/4 full and I am guarding it so I can share it with my little boy (20 months) when he is old enough. I think it is a great thing to use to tell him about his Great Grandma who is not longer with us.

Seems the other coffee alternatives try to immitate bad coffee. I’ve tried Roma and Caffix but their flavor is harsh compared to Postum. They taste a little better if you sweeten with molasses, an ingredient in Postum the others lack. Seems the big difference is that Postum used wheat & molasses, and these others use chickory. I’m not going to manufacture the stuff myself, but if somebody brought a product to market that was similar to the old Postum, I’d buy it.

Great site Jeff. I’d like to see you update it since Kraft Foods took Postum off the market, maybe publish their address, phone no. etc for all the unhappy Postum customers.
I liked Postum since I can’t drink caffeine due to health problems. I don’t want the calories of a sugared drink. As far as I’m concerned, teas, cocoas etc all need sugar – no thank you to sugar substitutes, I’ve got enough health problems already. Postum was a one-of-a-kind drink. There is nothing out there like it. I was very disappointed when Kraft took it off the market. I did write them a letter to let them know.
Here’s my thoughts on what might be done about it.
It’s possible that if enough people complain, Kraft would bring it back, but it’s unlikely. Complaints have been known to work, if there are enough people complaining, but if there aren’t enough customers to keep Postum on the market, most likely, even if every customer complained, there probably wouldn’t be enough to make them bring it back. But it’s definitely worth a try.
Perhaps Kraft could sell the recipe to another company. That’s is a feasible possibility.
If anyone out there knows of a company that could make Postum and might be interested in buying the recipe, you should direct them to Kraft Foods Inc. It’s possible that if several companies offer to purchase the recipe, Kraft might actually sell it.
Another feasible option would be a boycott of all Kraft products. Say there are 10,000 customers who buy Postum worldwide – where 10,000 isn’t enough to continue manufacturing a product or to bring it back, 10,000 people boycotting all of Kraft’s other products might have some impact.
Just some suggestions. Others out there probably have even better ideas. Keep brainstorming guys. Maybe something will work.
    Oh, one more thing….
–Save your empty Postum jars folks, someday they might be valuable–

I would like to get a hold of the recipe to try and make it and I know that other would too.

I used the recipe in post # 42 to make my own postum except I used wheat bran instead of corn meal since that is the ingredient on the Postum jar. It turned out too lumpy and left a lot of residue in the bottom of the cup. I then put it in the blender for a long time and it was much better but still leaves some residue. It sort of tastes like Postum but is a little wheaty-brany tasting. Also haven’t tried to find maltodextrin which is the other ingredient in Postum. Anyone have any suggestions on improving the recipe?

Where can I get Postum???? I have been drinking Postum for 30 years and now found out it has been dicontinued. WHY? It is the healthiest drink ever made. Why do companies discontinue healthy foods and beverages and continue selling harmful foods and beverages. I woukd buy a case if I could find it.
I am very disappointed in Kellogg and General Foods for discontinuing the best drink on earth.

I came upon your site while looking for a place to purchase Postum. After reading most of the responses on your site I decided to try Dandy Blend. #78 Tania (Feb. 20, 2006) recommended this product as a good substitute. I went to its website, http://www.dandyblend.com and found out more information on it. Ebay was doing a promotion so I got it cheaper on ebay than from the site. I have now tried it and would recommend it highly. Read Tania’s responses as I would mirror hers. I use one heaping teaspoon with a mug of hot water and then add Coffeemate French Vanilla to it.

Ok everyone, there is a company called Indulgent Foods trying to purchase the formulas for Postum. This company is based in Utah, and makes gourmet cocoas, called Stephen’s Cocoa. I had emailed them with the suggestion that they try to obtain the recipe for Postum and they have let me know they are already trying to purchase the formula from Kraft. They asked me to contact Kraft (and get the word out to others to contact Kraft) and ask them to let Indulgent Foods obtain this formula. Soooo…this is something pro-active we who love Postum could be doing, if you are so inclined. Their number is 1-800-431-7678

Never mind, I thought, I can still buy it in America. Shannon’s comments posted today about Indulgent Foods sounds encouraging. Can you let me know their e-mail and/or website? I have been knee-deep in the Postum debate for a month now after deciding to simply end my 65+ year use of the delightful product. I simply dropped it when the last spoonful ran out. No time looking for substitutes nor indulging in any “races to the trough” to stockpile … still remember the crassness of the ’73 oil shortage stampede. My caring friends have responded in other ways to shower me with a small bonanza, and I am now trying to find some humanitarian uses for my arrivals. Any ideas out there?

KRAFT PUT THE AX TO 113 YR OLD PRODUCT POSTUM WITHOUT ANY REGARD FOR CUSTOMERS
    HI I AM EVA
I AM VERY CONCERNED AND UPSET OVER WHAT KRAFT FOODS HAS DONE RECENTLY
BY DROPPING THE PRODUCTION OF THE OVER 100 YR PRODUCT “POSTUM”
(but more so in the manner that they did it)
Yes they stopped production in late 2007 ..but never gave a hint to the public… Or if they did it was very quietly
Even our local grocer’s did not know…and it just wasnt there one day……I just dont think this is right
or ethical….It is like …’”well it is fine for you to buy all of our products …but we have no obligation to you whatsoever
and you dont deserve to have any warning if we decide to pull a product ..even if it something that ;you have used for
    many years”…
This could happen to your favorite product…how would you feel? Without any warning?? I would have felt so much better toward the company if they would have told us when they knew…But it just feels like they have total disrespect
toward their customers…They way they did this bothers me as much as losing the product does…I understand that
the company doesnt want to continue producing Postum…but to just not care if their customers had enough notice to
go out and get that last jar…is just plain not good business
I like many others drink Postum on a daily basis…I just recently found out…3 months too late to even go and get me
a few extra jars…I am down to my last few cups…
Please there needs to be some Notice to the public about this….There is a large Religous community that used this
product for health reasons… among others
This should be of concern to EVERYONE as you never know if your favorite Product will be next and with NO warning.
should we trust the Kraft company with our loyality over certain products….We come to depend upon certain
products and feel confident that they will still be there tomorrow, or at least that we will have a some advance notice
about them being pulled from our grocery shelves.
Can we trust Kraft to be the supplier of the products that we hold dear and consume every day? After waking up this
morning and facing the last few cups of my beloved drink POSTUM…I for one Do not think so…
    Thanks

I’ve found Inka is the closest thing to Postum. Not identical but close enough. I see a few people above also mentioned it. Learned about it through a nursing home that got the product for some of their Polish residents. Likely you can find Inka in an ethnic food store; I found a store carrying Polish foods had a shelf full of it. You have to use more than Postum (or Caffix or Roma) but its good the way it is without adding molasses like I do to Caffix or Roma.

I really like postum and I really do welcome and appreciate different opinions about postum because we don’t all have same taste buds. One man’s favourite food is another man’s poison. For me Postum is the best while for someone else its the worst beverage. Concerning the nutrition value I am not sure what to think or believe because science is not pure but an applied science. I’ve been drinking Postum almost every day for 32 years. Over the years I’ve made a few fans of the stuff, its great at the ski house after being out in the cold on the mountain, that kind of thing. I drink a pot of tea in the morning and Postum in the evening before bed. I haven’t been sleeping as well since Postum was discontinued. I didn’t realize it was popular with mormons but that makes sense.
I’m also going to try boycotting Kraft foods so I need a list of brands they own: Post, Nabisco, Toblerone chocolate, Oscar Mayer, Grey Poupon, DiGiorno, Tassimo, Cote d’Or chocolate, Twinings tea, Tazo tea, several brands of coffee, funny but I don’t like much of this stuff anyway. There’s way better mustard, crackers, deli meats, tea etc, the Kraft stuff is mostly junk.

My 92 year old grandmother has been begging me to write Kraft AND also call them to complain about the demise of Postum. I had no idea until I read this message board how many people felt the same way. She is downright angry about it! She, like other posters, feels that Kraft did not promote the product enough, and that if it had, it would have been much more widely known, consumed and appreciated. I wrote Kraft on their website today, but after reading all the similar comments on this board, I realize I will just be receiving a form letter telling me to look forward to Kraft’s other products. Sheesh. I have scoured several stores here in Southern California for any remaining jars…no luck. Now it’s on to eBay to pay triple or more the original price. Must keep grandma happy….. I wish someone at Kraft could read this board and see how passionate people are about this product.

Here is the Info from the Link:
    This is my theory
In 2002 the FDA discovered a chemical called Acrylamide in lots of processed foods, especially some roasted and baked foods that had to reach high temperatures to process. and I understand that this chemical is a carcigen…just do a simple internet search on it…
Postum turned out to have a very high level of Acrylamide in it….they believe it was due to the long baking process that was needed to produce POSTUM.
So now the FDA is putting pressure on company’s to lower the levels of Acrylamide in the foods they produce…and since POSTUM has such a high level of this chemical….well Kraft most likely decided that it would be wise to just make this product go quietly away if possible…
I am just not buying the story that the demand was not there… Why would they stop production “everywhere” not even let Canada produce it?…or not even have it as an online product… I believe that they figured that people had been drinking this for Soooooooooooo…many years that well…If they waited for FDA to come to their door then it would be in the news …etc…. and it could potentially cause problesm for them…
    make sense?
I in good concencious can no longer drink Postum.

    Hi Everyone,
If you want to try a product that is close to Postum give Kaffree Roma a try. I found it in Whole Foods for a lot less than it was on the internet.
I know quite a few people at Post in Battle creek and they all say that the reason what Kraft pulled the plug is because they wanted to rape the Post Division. It was once a wonderful company to work for, but when Kraft came in everyone could not wait to retire out. With Ralston coming in there are high hopes for a new start.
Since Kraft pulled out all the original (yet original) ovens and roasters it would not be possible to start up production in Battle Creek again unless they put new machines in.
Hopefully another company will bring our Postum back.

    Ken,
Perhaps whomever starts production of postum again …It will be an improved version…I read on the Food and drug administration site that the Brewed kind of postum had an acceptable level of acrylamide in it…I am interested in hearing how they plan to make postum safer to drink. As it is , I am selling my extra postum on ebay. But I am still hoping for an improved safer version of Postum to be produced.
I have ordered some Teeccino brewed drink which is suppose to taste a lot like postum… And I did converse with a spokesperson for their company . They said that they would not test their products for Acrylamide.

There is a stock holders meeting today with past plant workers. One of my friends is going to ask about the Acrylamide level. She said this is the first she has heard about Acrylamide in Postum. This lady worked in the lab at the plant so she can also check with the people currently working in the lab as well.
Also for those who are interested, the sale of of the Post Division to Ralston will be complete this August. If anyone wants to request Postum being brought back can most likely speak with them.

Hey all you Postum lovers. I have a product that you might want to try. I have been working on it for over 2 years and it is just now being sold to the public. It will not be available in the stores, only through the internet site or through direct distributors that we are setting up now. It is very healthy, more antioxidants than blueberries and there are many flavors to choose from. I have some that taste very much like coffee and others that are very chocolatey or fruity. It is considered a caffeine free beverage as there is only a tiny bit in it but for those of you who need more energy there is Theobromine which is a healthy non addictive alternative to caffeine. It will give you energy for 4-5 times longer than caffeine but it will never make you feel jittery. It is awesome. For those mormons out there it is WOW approved!!! Postum is one of the most UN-healthiest things you can put in your body, because it is loaded with a cancer-causing substance called acrylamide. This chemical forms when certain kinds of foods, namely starchy items, are heated up in the manufacturing process. Postum is highly processed and heat-treated before it hits store shelves.
I’ll take caffeine any day over acrylamide, a carcinogen. Besides, ever hear of organic decaf coffee, if you’re drinking Postum because you think it’s a “healthy alternative” ? The FDA’s evaluation of the acrylamide levels are totally off the charts compared to other foods and beverages.

I live on Union Square in NY, just above Greenwich Village. And of course the STARBUCK invasion (a real mark of the affeinization of America, no?) is well known around here. The $6.00 lattes, the mega cups of java, and best yet — the avalanche of stores themselves. It seems if you walk three blocks in any direction in Gotham you find another STARBUCKS. I said to them once, “what IS it with you guys, anyway?” “We’re creating jobs,” the manager shrugges. “Not for anyone around here,” I said. Unless you count all the paper cups carelssly strewn about that must be swepped up by Union Square Coalition workers. Sigh.
But back to POSTUM. I am often up in the predawns as I am now, writing. And the warm comforting taste of that delicious drink always kept me going, be it research paper, short story, poetry, letters, whatever.
Like the sound of my cat Lexie, nesting and purring on my foot as I peck away, POSTUM has been a critical element in my early morning rituals. And to lose it, because (the bottom line is) it is “no longer marketable/commercially viable/and let’s not even consider the religious folks who enjoy it, guys!”) seems another sad indication of where we are going, putting profit before people – yet again.
I join everyone in a collective ‘yawp’, as Walt Whitman might say.

Tomorrow morning ( Oct. 1st ) I will open the last of the eight jars of Postum I received last Christmas ! For the most part, I restricted myself to one cup per day and it hasn’t been easy.
Once that jar is gone I don’t know what I’ll do?
Decafe green tea? We’ll see. I have a month or so to decide. Meanwhile, I’ll savor each cup of my favorite hot drink…Postum !

I have 5 jars of Postum (dated Feb 2009) that I bought for my mom who drank it every day. She passed away recently and no one else I know drinks it. I will be happy to sell it but it is heavy to mail.

I still have 5 jars of Postum. I will sell one or more to you for $30 per jar plus postage. Let me know if you want any. Wendy

I donated my 5 jars of Postum yesterday to a care facility for mostly elderly folks. They will be delighted to have Postum to drink for a bit longer.

What a saint you are, Wendy. I miss, oh I miss my Postum. I went into the hospital for a time and my family moved me out of my apartment and into their home. My 1/2 jar of Postum was a casualty of the move. When I recovered, I found it had been discontinued. Alas. I wonder how long people will be able to sell their jars on ebay for $30 – $60.

I live in a senior community and fondly remember Postum. I didn’t know it was gone from stores til this morning when another senior who can’t drink coffee told me of her and her daughters search from Florida to Maine for Postum. Since they do not use computer I told her I’d check and found this site. Thanks for the “history”, which I will share with her, but wish I could get the real product. I do remember it fondly from my (much) younger days :-).
I wish Kraft or Post (or whomever has the abilities) would bring it back for us “old folks”. We are becoming a larger percentage of the population as time goes by. Please……!!!!

I drank Postum for many years, as did my Grandmother. For the last year I had switched to tea, and didn’t find out until this week that Postum is GONE. I am so shocked. Right now my stomach is on the blink, and I am desperately looking for Postum. I hope all these outraged comments I have read will have some impact, and that Postum will come back.

It would be best to go to Kraft Foods web site and look on their forum for the Postum topics. Many people have posted there over the last year requesting Postum be returned to the market. On the forum, the moderator can also point you to the phone number for Kraft foods if you want to make your request directly and be heard. Maybe if we all contact them, they’ll hear us and bring it back?

Also consider contacting RalCorp holdings who apparently purchased Postum from Kraft in mid-2008. I have no word on the status of this deal but their web site address is: http://www.ralcorp.com/ On their site is their email contact info and phone numbers. Couldn’t hurt to ask the (new) source.

I just found out today 15 December 2008 that Kraft
had dropped Postum back in June 2007. I found this out when I asked at HyVee in Siouc City, IA why it was not on the shelves.
I called Kraft to complain and ask if they had offerered the recipe to any others and they said they didn’t have any info on that, I also asked what kind of numbers they had to back up their dropping it and they didn’t have that information either.
I suggest we start a class action agains Kraft to force them to release the recipe or at least get another producer to manufacture it. It looks like I am not the only person that needs my daily postum fix.
I would think they would be promoting POSTUM as an American farm altenative to coffee.

I read a few months ago that C.W. Post got the recipe for Postum while he was a patient at a Seventh Day Adventist hospital.
If this is true, Post has no right to keep the recipe a secret.
Maybe the recipe is in a Seventh Day Adventist cook book?
Are there any Seventh Day Adventists out there reading this? Can you verify this?

C.W. Post did not get his Postum recipe from the Seventh Day Adventist hospital. The Battle Creek Sanitarium run by the Kellogg brothers made what they called Caramel Coffee. From what they say, it was pretty nasty. That might be why Kellogg never tried to sell it to the public.
C.W. tried different amounts of wheat, wheat bran and molasses until he got it right on January 1, 1895. On that day Postum was “born”.
I too have sent a letter to RalCorp asking them to consider production again. They said that I should contact the plant in Battle Creek.
The main problem is that Kraft removed all the original 1900 ovens and cookers from the Battle Creek plant in September 2006. It took until December 2007 for Postum to sell out.
If I knew sooner that production was over I would have bought more. A friend at the plant pulled the last two boxes off the line and held on to them. He sold them to me at the employee cost last January. I have 48 jars now and that will more than likely last me the rest of my life.
Look for Natural Touch Kaffree Roma. It is a roasted Grain Beverage that is close to Postum. It is not exactly like our old friend Postum, but it will do. If you put a little molasses in it you really get that taste we loved so much.

I never considered Postum as a coffee substitute but enjoyed it in its own right, especially good
made with milk. My wife recently found some INKA
and to my taste it’s every bit as good as Postum.
I’ve only made it with milk so can’t vouch for it
    with water.

I am shocked to find out that my wonderful, daily beverage of Postum has been discontinued. I was blissfully unaware until I started to go to one store after another looking to replenish my pantry and couldn’t find it anywhere, and any clerks I asked didn’t have an answer for me either. I am upset that we weren’t warned that the product was going to be discontinued, and hope that another company will realize that this is a great product and with better advertising can make this a profitable business. I am not a coffee drinker, so am not looking for a coffee substitute, but have just enjoyed this rich, unique taste for many, many years. I am not looking for a new favourite – I want the plain old Postum!!

Very sad to see it go and havn’t found a good replacement for it in Canada. Others coffee substitutes just don’t cut it!! Will look for Natural Touch Kaffree Roma as suggested by Ken
It was especially good with Vanilla Soy Milk.

I take great exception to your parenthetical comment at the very end of your Motley Vision article on Postum “Dandy Blend” (Oh, please!). Ever tried it? Then don’t knock it until you do. You might be REALLY surprised.
I have been reading all the comments both to the Motley Vision article and this blog, and am absolutely shocked to find that NOBODY, in all their searching, has even mentioned it, although it has been a growing force in the market, especially since Postum’s demise. I introduced it to the medical herbalist profession at meetings in 1988. For the first 15 years, it was primarily available through alternative health practitioners because of its therapeutic potential, and only began appearing in health food stores in 2002, at the behest of these self-same practitioners. If you find Inka or Krakus good substitutes for both coffee and Postum, you’ll find this better. It is the roasted dandelion root that makes the difference, both in flavor and in health-promoting goodness.
But that is only part of the story for you Mormon Postum lovers.
Dandy Blend is the product of Dr. Peter Gail, a Ph.D. ethnobotanist who has been studying how various cultures use backyard weeds for food and medicine for the last 47 years. In 1979, while serving as the Director of International Studies for Cleveland State University, he discovered that dandelions were probably the most popular wild vegetable in the world. He and his graduate students found that he had over 630 recipes for dandelions from 43 countries. This led him to research the plant exhaustively, and write two books about them. In addition, after publication of his book The Dandelion Celebration, he started the National Dandelion Cookoff to draw attention to their virtues in 1994, and by 2004 was drawing around 15,000 people a year to the Dandelion Festival and Cookoff. USA Today called him the King of the Dandelions, Good Morning America dubbed him the ‘Wizard of Weeds’. Currently he goes around the US in his motor home teaching the economically challenged and other s to eat weeds to stay healthy in hard times.
In 1988, he discovered a beverage made of dandelions in Toronto. He brought it to the USA, got permission to private label it, made a number of changes to improve its therapeutic value and flavor, and put it on the market. Sales of Dandy Blend over the past 5 years have been growing 50% a year with almost no marketing–all by word of mouth. That, however, will change this year as more effort will be made to let those who are missing Postum and are being told they shouldn’t be drinking coffee that Dandy Blend is the best thing thay can use to replace it– nothing else even comes close!
Now, who is this Dr. Peter Gail? in 1957, he converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and over the years has served in practically every office from Primary teacher to Bishop and Stake High Counsellor. Currently, he is the Cleveland (OH) Region Welfare Specialist, providing welfare training and support services for five stakes in Northern Ohio and Western Pennyslvania. Through this calling, he has been able to introduce a number of Church welfare leaders to Dandy Blend, and it is now being sold in Salt Lake City at Dave’s Health and Nutrition, as well as in several other stores.
So, Bro. Werner, Dandy Blend, while made in Poland for us according to our recipe, is not only a US creation, but also is developed, manufactured, and distributed by one of your very own, a genuine Mormon convert.
Anyone wanting to try it, visit http://www.dandyblend.com to see what you are in for, and then call us here at 800-697-4858, and ask for a sample. Your call will be answered by my faithful assistant, another genuine Latter-day Saint convert, Melinda, who will make sure that you get your sample so that you can try it for yourself before investing in it.
And watch for it in health food stores throughout Utah and the Intermountain West. It’s on its way there. It is already scattered throughout Colorado in Vitamin Cottage and other stores.

Postum is still available on eBay.
The availability on eBay continues to decrease. Too, the price continues to increase.
I bought some of it with the express purpose of re-selling it. I am waiting for the “right” price and time to list it. (No, I *won’t sell it for less than you can buy it on eBay!)
My favorite spice, McCormick’s Salt-n-Spice was, like Postum, discontinued. I bought *years* worth of it on eBay — and paid handsomely for it!
