Type treatment was particularly challenging in, for example, font selections with multiple character, diacritic, and unicode support—working from scanned manuscripts, to Microsoft Word documents, to final InDesign layouts introduced a variety of new and surprising computer technology hurdles (unicode variants could make simple copy-pasting an adventure). Design and content considerations demanded an array of styles to indicate meaning, translations, and transliterations of various historical texts. Working directly with the author and a team of editors was valuable, and essential—in this case everything from line spacing to indents and other minutiae could change the meaning of a passage or entire chapter.
