IDEA Program Information Sheet

Applicant’s Name:
Jeffrey Werner
List four contemporary artists, designers, or illustrators whose work you admire, and explain why:

  1. Joseph Müller-Brockmann – Müller-Brockmann’s intuitive grid systems, simple geometry and his use of concise, high-impact image and type in public and commercial poster work offers me a reliable set of tools and practices I continue to draw on as I study and practice design.
  2. Andy Goldsworthy – Goldsworthy’s use of nature as a medium—working with found rocks, vegetation—inspires me: art is possible anywhere, it does not require special tools or supplies. Because of his work’s transitory nature I am reminded to avoid pride and sentimentality for my own, and to continually create new art.
  3. Mowry Baden – A Victoria sculptor and art professor, Baden’s public commissions disregard expected cultural art norms and are thus very controversial with the general public. I admire how he pushes the boundaries of public taste yet maintains a position of hesitant respect that continues to garner public funds.
  4. Chris Ware – I admire Ware’s strong sense of graphic design, his incorporation of information and diagrammatic forms in mature storytelling settings within the more traditional comic art form. I take lessons from his attention to detail and the knowledge one should have of his own art form’s history.

Why do you wish to attend the Idea Program at Capilano College, and what do you expect from your education:
I’ve no doubt IDEA’s emphasis on life drawing and painting will create a needed base for developing and informing my work beyond my currently narrow technical design skills. I expect my IDEA instructors and peers to challenge me to the point of tears. I am optimistic both these elements will fashion in me a practical methodology for developing coherent ideas, plans and final products to meet real-world (paid) design demands. More importantly, I’ll feel more confident under my own self-scrutiny.

Hey! Thanks for posting a comment in my blog (I replied to you there: http://nikosilvester.blogspot.com/2005/05/nscad-admissions-essay.html ).
I just went and looked at the Andy Goldsworthy work you linked. Wow! What beautiful work. It reminds me of the work of Stu Jenks: http://www.endicott-studio.com/gal/galjenks/galcirc.html
Good luck in your graphic design endeavours.
