Hy’s Seasoning Salt has been my favourite seasoning salt since childhood. Moms used to cover my green beans with its golden brown crystals. The red-capped, perfectly cylindrical bottle of Hy’s (name on the black and red label in medieval lowercase cursive) was always on the mantle of the kitchen stove. It was a really old bottle, faded to orange, and I could never figure out how I could sprinkle so much of it yet we never had to buy more. Think I was a teen when finally informed the thing was refilled, just like the squeezable ketchup bottle (from paint-can tins of Heinz), I was amazed to learn.
So now, after seven odd years on my own, I’ve bought my own, albeit the smaller 225g version, Hy’s. It’s bright red and sits on my kitchen stove. So exotic to have Hy’s now on anything I want: rice. Well, rice so far. And to get to the point here, I read the ingredients for the first time: salt, spice (including red pepper) monosodium glutamate, dehydrated onion, calcium silicate.
MSG. Huh. Never knew. Does that explain why I like it so much? And what is wrong with spices and Chinese restaurants that use MSG? Was it deforming kids or stunting their growth or capacities to learn? I’ll read up on this some more. Above was the only pic of Hy’s I could find on Google.

I really enjoy Hy’s seasoning salt (No MSG)but am having difficulty finding the 1 kg size. I used to buy it at Costco, but they no longer carry it. I live in Toronto. Is there anyone out there that knows a store that carries it.
-
Most Loblaws and Dominion stores carry Hy’s. If they don’t…just ask the Manager in charge of the department if they will order/carry it. They should be able to with no problem.
Hope that helps you. -
Ooops…I meant to add this…
You might not get the large container, but smaller is better than none at all right =)
It’s a fantastic seasoning. -
I FEEL EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE OTHER PEOPLE. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE USING THIS AMAZING SPICE. HELP, HELP HELP:)

I live in England and the only way I can get this seasoning salt is to ask friends to bring me back some when they visit Canada. Do any of you know if I can buy it in England or order it over the web. Help…….

I also used to buy Hy’s seasoning salt at Costco and at one time even at Zehrs (affiliated with Loblawws I thought)but can’t find there either anymore. Would appreciate any leadsas to where it is available. My last jar carried the name Hy’s Fine Foods, London, Canada and I couldn’t help wondering if the brand name had been acquired by Club House which was also located in London, Ontario ?

Doesn’t anybody go out to eat on a special night? Hy’s Steak house is an extra favourite of mine in Calgary. Haven’t been there for years. More recently I had a fabulous meal at Hy’s in Toronto. Hy’s is on Hornby Street, Vancouver, right downtown. Hy’s is made by McCormicks Spices. The restaurants themselves – don’t know.
-
Hi, I thought I was the only one going nuts to get Hy’s. It is so amazing. I am from Montreal and had my sister who lives in Ontario send it to me. She can no longer find it either.
Thanks Norm for the clue. I have emailed McCormick Spices to see if they can tell us where to find it. Stay tuned. -
I made a hit with the other boaters last night at the Marina. I decided that we should have some chicken wings. Using my secret recipe of Hy’s Seasoning Salt on the wings, I did them up with the Toaster Oven Broiler. I did have one problem though, the wings were being consummed so quickly, that next time I’ll have to use 3 or 4 Toaster Oven Broilers.

any info from McCormick? I’m in the US and would love to be able to purchase some of this product.
-
No luck with McCormick, they never responded. However, my sister who lives in Cambridge, Ontario found some at her WALMART of all places and shipped some to me. I will be checking my local Walmart here in Quebec to see if we carry it too.
Good luck to all Hy’s fans. -
JACK POT…………….
Walmart has it in stock also in Quebec.
They carry the regular and Cajun Hy’s.
It is made by McCormick Canada in London Ontario.
LOOK OUT BBQ, HERE I COME. -
Try getting the Seasoning from the restaurants. Check out http://www.hyssteakhouse.com for the locations. I know that the Calgary location sells the larger shaker.

I’ve used Hy’s Sesoned Salt for at least the last 35 years. Nothing’s better for chicken on the rotisserie, or roasted, nor on steaks (beef and veal). Burgers, too! Thanks for the tip on the website. I’m going to try it right away!
-
@ Yvonne
Hy’s seasoning does not have gluten in it. Look here http://www.penny.ca/McCormicks.htm scroll down until you see HYS FINE FOODS.
@ rory
The only seasoning that McCormics still makes for Hy’s is Seasoning Salt, Cajun and Lemon Pepper. -
Anybody know if you can still get the 1kg size that Costco use to sell and get it for the same great Costco price?
-

I was out in Vancouver last month and Hy’s is still around in small quantities (IGA)-both non MSG and regular. Not sure about the 1kg size. Had to pay a small fortune to ship it and bottles of hot sauce to the UK. I may have to resort to a home made knock off.
-
I found Hy’s at the Sobeys in Brantford. It might be worth a try to check other Sobeys stores.
-

You can always find Hy’s seasoning salt with or without MSG in Calgary, because it is named after Hy’s of Calgary, the original Hy’s Steakhouse. It is available in all grocery stores and at Costco. No reason why it should not be available on a national basis??
-
I want to order some of your Hy’s seasoning salt. How can I do that. I live in Tomball Tx. Thanks, paul

just looked up”calcium silicate” do you all REALIZE what this garbage is? so my full bottle of “seasoning salt ” is heading for the garbage!……….. where it belongs! Why oh why is it that companys do not care about poisoning their customers??????????????????? Barbara B.C. Canada.

will calcium silicate kill you?

Under food processing regulations you will find Calcium silicate in a very large sector of all your ‘favourite’ foods, as you will MSG.
Unless you grow your own food and harvest it yourself…. you will always be subject to ‘processed’ products and will ingest substances regulated by government standards, which they deem safe for human consumption. Unfortunately that is our way of life and have evolved in putting our trust into outside sources to process our foods.
