A quick and fun pro bono project for the organization I raced under for seven years. A kind of giving back to the community feel. I was in charge of the frontend design of their new race calendar and results website, working with the VP of Road as project manager and a racer/programmer who developed the backend. We built the site with RacingOnRails, a Ruby port developed by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association specifically for bicycle racing associations.
The goal wasn’t to reinvent the current Cycling BC Site, so we targeted version 0.5 of the Calendar and Results listings as something that could bring the most value to Cycling BC members. It’s live now and is intended as a race calendar and complete results listing for all major road events in the province. Future versions will include Bar and Overall Cup standings as well as more in-depth individual racer results. Some more tweaks to the user interface, too.
The cool thing about the project was setting up Ruby and Rails on my local computer, in conjunction with SVN while working in conjunction, and simultaneous updating, with the project manager and programmer. Also a challenge were the methods I explored for formatting the race calendar for usability: zebra striping? horizontal lines? indenting child races? Accommodating stage and single-day races? What is the path people take in churning through the data: by date? by race? by event?
