Emily Carr Design Graduation 2008

Carl Fletcher, 48 Table
I saw this in person when it was presented in their 3rd year furniture class. The requirement was to make a piece with two functions. Fletcher and co. made a coffee table / hall stand thing out bamboo ply. I think the whole 2-in-1 premise is too gimmicky, but on its own as a table this piece works.

Zachary Fluker, Hyme
Beautiful.

Daniel Hobson, Open Baffle Adapting
Aesthetically it leaves something to be desired, but I like the audiophile aspect. It seems to me this would have already been done, but what do I know. It’s all a psychosomatic ballet between the tech specs and those guys ears, anyway.

Alexandra Kenyon, Precious Things: Heirloom
Hard to say execution-wise, but the concept (dishes based on family nose profiles) is cute and relates two seemingly unrelated forms.

Sandy Lam, Spaceless
Looks lovely, and at the least this is the best example of how to photodoc and summarize your project in one image, something a lot of the projects could take a cue from.

Dirga Agoes, Duet: Food Pairings with Wine
I’d say most of the pieces I like from the Grads are pieces I’d actually use, and if there was actually a link to Agoes’ wine and food advice site, I’d actually use it despite the ho-hum design.

Carol Chu, Stanley Park Ecology Society: Family Explorer’s Kit
I could see this working as a tourist rental kit. I appreciate people who tackle a local, family based project / problem.

Jennifer Ewing, Digital Wood Type Poster: Phenomenal Woman
Perty.

Melanie Haines, Backyard Biophilia
Nice title, seems useful and something that would entertain and inform me.

Beau House, Michel Tournier Series
More perty posters.

Sung Lee, Greater Vancouver Zoo Brand Guide
Looks like a solid, classic CommD identity challenge to be proud of.

Grace Leung, Museum of the Last Banana
Heh, but also an interesting viewpoint to take on climate change.

Russel Pistun, Princesa Cashews Brand & Package
I followed Pistun’s process on Flickr as he was one of the students who was selected for the second phase of the Philippines internship (I was one of the students sent in the first round). Another example of a well-done, classic CommD assignment, but actually applied and, as far as I know, actually used.

Aviva Rotstein, Mr. Edward P. Blah goes to Superspy School for Grumpy Groan-Ups
Would like to see inside this book / box because I’m attracted to the reverse Harry Potter idea about a school where kids teach grumpy adults to find their hidden powers.

Alan Woo, Super Ordinary
One of the few Grads I know personally, and another’s whose process was a joy to follow on Flickr.
Unfortunately I’m not in Vancouver to see the grad show in person. I suspect many works don’t translate well on screen.
