Is Mike Rowe, the guy who registered mikerowesoft.com and was under attack from the “real” Microsoft, a looser?
First, the Bill Gates company offers him 10 bucks for the domain. Rowe, Victoria teenager that he is, dutifully counters and asks for $10,000. Bad move, apparently, as this appears like he purposefully registered the pun domain, which of course he did, but now he just looks greedy. Then MS lawyers go in for the kill and send him an inch-thick World Intellectual Property Organization book and a 25-page letter in the mail, all cease and desist and whatnot. And so despite hundreds of worldwide press articles and interviews later, Microsoft buys him out in almost Simpsonesque parody with an Xbox and some certificates. And then this morning, found out Rowe is selling said inch-thick WIPO book and letter (well, a copy of them) on eBay. Current bidding on the “Mike Rowe Official WIPO Book As Seen On TV” sits at $650.
OK, the guy is only 17 and of course he can’t do battle with MS all year long and probably had to relinquish the domain eventually. But for an Xbox? And now eBay? Have some self respect. And you’re making teenagers look bad. I read some of the entries to his forum (which, btw, is full of cheesy ISP and Domain ads) and people were actually congratulating him on apparently sticking it to Microsoft by accepting the Xbox. Maybe he’ll redeem himself and hack Unix into the console, or act really bored and yawn out loud during his official MS training classes.
