There’s an old joke in cycling that says if you want to slow some guys down, just slap a number on their back. Because on the weekend club ride they’ll attack and drop you on Lands End, or put the boots to you up the Malahat. But enter them in a race and they’re pack fodder, missing breaks, off the back or dropping out.
So ya, I got schooled again in a squash match last Wednesday night. It was the first night of the city-wide Division 3 league (the lowest ranked league). I’m on the Victoria Squash Club’s Team 1, in position 2 (pos. 1 being the top guy on the team). I played a man from another team I think I would have normally beat. Another player from my club thought so, too. The only difference on Wednesday was that it was an actual tournament match and not just casual.
That joke in cycling was often very true, for some guys. I’ll bet there’s an equivalent in squash. I’m going to learn to stay away from it. Tonight I’ll win.
Update Oct. 28: I lost again big time last night. Man.
Update Nov. 1: I lost the majority of my games during this weekend’s club tournament.
Update Nov. 5: I lost again on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
