\"scissors.png\" I’m back to barbers after a year of hacking at my head with a pair of $30 electric shears. As much as I want to save money, I’m no Edward Scissor Hands.
\nSo I’ve settled on a Greek shop on Fort Street after years of floating among five or six other shops and stylists in Victoria. My dilemma now, however, is how to tactfully go about getting old Gus, the owner, to cut my hair and not one of the other three working in his shop.
\nThe others at Gus’ are competent to be sure, but of all the barbers I’ve had since I got over my fear of them in the fourth grade, Gus is the man for my head of hair (though there was this one guy in Syria that rocked my locks).
\nI’ve got a pretty straightforward, clean-cut guy style and Gus cuts it just the way I like it, with traditional finesse, attention to detail, and for only $12. But when I walk into his shop, there’s always the risk Gus will be with another customer and one of the other barbers with an empty chair will call me over.
\nOf the half dozen times I’ve been there I’ve managed to fluke out and get old Gus twice in a row this year. Gus vaguely remembers me, but I’m no regular yet. So can I just walk in, sit down and say I’m waiting for Gus to finish up? Is it rude to refuse a cut from someone else working there? Is Gus reserved for the regulars, for his oldest clients? Does Gus know how much I need him?
\nEileen just suggested I make an appointment, but for one I don’t want to be fixed to a certain time: I like to just drop in when I get the chance to go downtown. And two, what if they don’t let you reserve a person? And what if, even if I can reserve Gus, I show up and he’s busy and I still have to refuse the others?
\nAnd while I’m on the subject, how much do you tip your barber, if at all? Do you tip hairstylists? What about hairstylists at some budget hairstyling chain? I hadn’t even heard about barber tipping until high school. I usually pay with a $20 bill, get my change, then hand the guy back a loonie. It’s so much more awkward than tipping at a restaurant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
