{"id":254,"date":"2005-05-26T14:30:27","date_gmt":"2005-05-26T14:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeffwerner.ca\/wp\/?p=254"},"modified":"2013-03-07T18:03:51","modified_gmt":"2013-03-08T02:03:51","slug":"which_design_sc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeffwerner.ca\/testa\/which_design_sc\/","title":{"rendered":"Which design school: ECIAD or Cap College?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"school_covers.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/jeffwerner.ca\/images\/journal\/school_covers.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"279\" class=\"noborder\" \/><br \/>\nAs of today I&#8217;ve been accepted to begin studies at two design schools in Vancouver: Cap College&#8217;s three-year <a href=\"http:\/\/capcollege.bc.ca\/programs\/idea\/index.xhtml\">Illustration and Design diploma<\/a> and Emily Carr&#8217;s four-year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eciad.ca\/www\/programs\/bd_comm_design.html\">Foundation and Communication Design degree<\/a>.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve got to decide on one and I&#8217;m looking for advice from alumni, established designers, anyone. For those not familiar with one or both of the institutions, what are your feelings based on getting a diploma vs. a degree?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not necessarily pitting one school against the other: I&#8217;m wondering what people&#8217;s gut reactions or experiences are. I&#8217;m trying to take into account what my goals are and which school can best help me meet them. I want to be a smart, an outgoing, a practical, a cutting-edge designer. I&#8217;m trying not to compare financial or time investments between the two schools (though there is that pressure).<br \/>\nSome elements I am considering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quality of faculty<\/li>\n<li>Quality of students<\/li>\n<li>Preparation for working in the field<\/li>\n<li>Balance of applied and theoretical study<\/li>\n<li>Reputation of school in the field<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My background: I&#8217;m 25, have a degree in art history and writing, a couple years of self-taught web design, and very little visual art practice.<br \/>\nSome examples of graduate work from both schools:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idea05.ca\/\">Capilano College IDEA 05<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/designgrads2004.eciad.ca\/\">Emily Carr Design Grads 2004<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of today I&#8217;ve been accepted to begin studies at two design schools in Vancouver: Cap College&#8217;s three-year Illustration and Design diploma and Emily Carr&#8217;s four-year Foundation and Communication Design degree.
