{"id":343,"date":"2006-12-02T23:20:20","date_gmt":"2006-12-02T23:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeffwerner.ca\/wp\/?p=343"},"modified":"2013-03-07T18:01:21","modified_gmt":"2013-03-08T02:01:21","slug":"technical_skill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeffwerner.ca\/testa\/technical_skill\/","title":{"rendered":"Technical Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For all its foundations in conceptual learning and creativity, its teaching steeped in process, I find I&#8217;m actually learning some technical skills in art and design school as well.<br \/>\nAnd while I admire what the former gives me (and the way Emily Carr holds it above craft and technical skill; it&#8217;s why I decided to get my degree here), I&#8217;ve noticed that the past three months in the Industrial Design program has given me some pretty good hands on, applied abilities that I can take with me anywhere.<br \/>\nMost of them are how to use power-tools, which when I think about it is a pretty  sweet bonus in itself.<br \/>\nFollowing is a list of (mostly entry-level) technical skills I&#8217;ve gained after three months in the Industrial Design program at the Emily Carr Institute (a few of these were experienced heavily in first year, too):<br \/>\n<strong>I now know how (or at the least have tried) to use a:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>table saw<\/li>\n<li>dado blades, cross-cutting jig for the table saw<\/li>\n<li>pin router<\/li>\n<li>band saw<\/li>\n<li>compound mitre saw<\/li>\n<li>drill press<\/li>\n<li>scroll saw<\/li>\n<li>belt, dowel and palm sanders<\/li>\n<li>hand router<\/li>\n<li>industrial dust extractor<\/li>\n<li>set square, combination square<\/li>\n<li>\n<\/li>\n<li>lathe<\/li>\n<li>drafting table<\/li>\n<li>scale ruler<\/li>\n<li>glue gun<\/li>\n<li>pneumatic brad nailer and staple gun<\/li>\n<li>jointer and plainer<\/li>\n<li>utility knife<\/li>\n<li>respirator<\/li>\n<li>vacuum former<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeffwerner.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/12\/252183500_74084419a1.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nHoly jeeze do I use a utility knife a lot these days.<br \/>\n<strong>I have experience working with:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>many types of adhesives<\/li>\n<li>many types of materials which I then attempt to adhere together<\/li>\n<li>HPDE plastic<\/li>\n<li>\n<\/li>\n<li>wood<\/li>\n<li>cardboard<\/li>\n<li>foamcore<\/li>\n<li>foam (pink mostly)<\/li>\n<li>plexi (acrylic plastic)<\/li>\n<li>miled steel<\/li>\n<li>paper (craft, bristol, photocopy; folding, cutting, scoring, warping, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>photo documentation<\/li>\n<li>twine and string<\/li>\n<li>markers (for drawing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For all its foundations in conceptual learning and creativity, its teaching steeped in process, I find I&#8217;m actually learning some technical skills in art and design school as well.
