We woke up at sunrise in the Middle of Montana to the sound of a vehicle passing on the gravel road close to the tent. Two minutes later the vehicle returns and a man yells “This is private property, get going.”
\nAnd so we did, and continued across the never-ending rolling ranches and farms that is South Dakota.

\nWe stopped for lunch in this rancher’s field. A woman soon drove by to ask us who we were looking for. Apprehensive, she let us be, but didn’t care for us to go exploring any further.

\nThe Country Singles newspaper is $1 and is available at every single rest area in South Dakota.

\nSouth Dakota Stories, a four-CD audio overview of state history. We saw a sign that said “Free Tapes”; turns out it’s $20 to ‘borrow’ the CDs at any major government rest area. Return the set to any other staffed rest area to get $15 back. Kind of a cool system.

\nWe stopped for gas in the middle of South Dakota. The gas station–and town–was long out of business, but the view from this bluff, with an abandoned grain elevator, was sweet.
\nWe ended up at a campsite in Murdo, South Dakota<\/a>, where we also patronized a biker bar and had a beer with a slice of orange in it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
