As the person responsible for taking the small organization I work for in Bali into as progressive an online realm as I can take it, one of the many recommendations–and one of the few that has required any spending–is that we purchase a Flickr Pro account.
The question my boss asked:
Can you give a quick explanation as to the advantages we get from upgrading our [currently free Flickr] account?
My response:
Reasons to use Flickr
- The most popular photo sharing website with the best reputation for quality
- The best designed photo sharing website, and one of the best designed websites in the world
- Many top designers, architects and photographers use Flickr and network with each other on there
- Enables true sharing and promotion of your photos through its technology, network of people and philosophy
- Allows advanced techniques to share your photos, such as adding notes to each photo, comments, tracking hits for each photo and organizing in sets. It allows you and anyone else to reproduce your photos on any website. Flickr directly influenced YouTube.
- Access to my network of contacts (approx. 180 people) and my contact’s contacts (in the thousands)
- Flickr is programmed to enhance searchability: our photos will come up more often in Google searches
- Organization: Flickr allows us to Tag and create sets for our photos, and make some private and some public. We could use it for our public promotion but also internally for projects
Reasons to pay $24.95/year for a Flickr Pro Account
- Allows unlimited photos to be uploaded, and in hi-res. Will be able to grow with us
- By allowing our hi-res photos to be uploaded we create a repository of print-ready images that we or anyone online can use to show off our stuff
- Integrated Creative Commons licensing as a progressive means of promotional copyright protection
- Allows more photos to be stored and viewable (a free account only lists your most recent 100 photos)
- Removes Yahoo advertising
